President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared three senatorial seats vacant following the death of lawmakers in the 10th Senate.
The affected constituencies include Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East Senatorial Districts.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio explained that the decision aligns with constitutional provisions requiring vacant legislative seats to be filled through fresh elections.
He noted that the vacancies were a direct result of the demise of the affected senators, making it necessary to initiate the process for their replacement.
According to him, the declaration paves the way for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections in the affected districts.
Akpabio further directed the electoral body to organise the polls within the timeframe stipulated by law, which is approximately 30 days from the date of the announcement.
The development is expected to trigger political activities across the affected regions, as parties prepare to field candidates for the vacant seats.
With the move, the Senate aims to ensure full representation for the impacted constituencies and maintain legislative balance in the upper chamber.
