Rumours of a major resignation in Nigeria’s cabinet have been shut down—but the political signal is clear.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed widespread claims that he has stepped down from his position, describing the circulating resignation letter as completely fake.
Speaking amid growing speculation, Adelabu made it clear that he remains fully committed to his current role in government—for now.
But he didn’t stop there.
The minister also confirmed that he is still very much in the race for the Oyo State governorship election in 2027, hinting at bigger political moves ahead.
“Yes, I am in the race,” he said, while stressing that any major decision regarding his ambition would be taken at the appropriate time and with the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
For now, he insists his focus remains on delivering results in the power sector.
The clarification comes shortly after a directive from President Tinubu ordering all political appointees with plans to contest in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Adelabu’s statement suggests a calculated approach—balancing his current responsibilities with future political ambitions.
Meanwhile, political activity in Oyo State is already intensifying.
Support groups aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have begun mobilising across all 33 local government areas, working to strengthen the party’s structure ahead of the next election cycle.
The push is not only focused on securing President Tinubu’s re-election but also on reclaiming power at the state level.
However, Adelabu may not have a smooth path.
Other contenders, including Sarafadeen Ali, are also reportedly eyeing the governorship ticket, setting the stage for a competitive internal battle within the APC.
With denial of resignation and confirmation of ambition happening at the same time, one thing is becoming clear—2027 politics has already begun.
