Nigeria’s 2027 political battle is already heating up—and the accusations are getting intense.
A top figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating moves to weaken the opposition ahead of the next general elections.
Speaking during a television interview, Okonkwo alleged that the APC is working behind the scenes through “charlatans” to destabilise the ADC and frustrate its growing coalition.
According to him, the ruling party is uncomfortable with the rising strength of the opposition alliance, which is positioning itself as a major contender in 2027.
He further claimed that attempts are being made to pressure Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), into taking decisions that could favour certain factions within the party.
The controversy is linked to an ongoing leadership dispute within the ADC, where a factional figure, Nafiu Gombe, has threatened legal action against INEC over its recognition of a rival leadership group.
Gombe insists that a recent court ruling supports his claim to leadership, while demanding that INEC reverse its stance and recognise his faction.
But Okonkwo dismissed those claims outright, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
He maintained that the recognised leadership structure of the ADC followed due process, noting that the party underwent nearly two years of internal negotiations before arriving at its current arrangement.
He also referenced the role of former INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, in validating the process, insisting that any irregularity would have been flagged.
The unfolding drama highlights deepening tensions within the opposition camp, even as it attempts to build a united front against the APC.
Despite the internal disputes, the ADC-led coalition continues to attract heavyweight political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi.
With alliances forming and accusations flying, analysts say the road to 2027 is shaping up to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested political battles yet.
