The Federal Government has introduced a bold new initiative aimed at rewarding academic excellence and innovation among Nigerian students through a high-value national prize scheme.
Under the programme—officially named the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize Programme—top-performing students from tertiary institutions will receive substantial financial rewards for outstanding dissertations and research work.
According to the Ministry of Education, the initiative is designed to elevate research output and encourage innovation with real-world impact. Students whose academic work demonstrates originality and practical value will be recognised and rewarded at a national level.
Under the structure of the programme, undergraduate students with exceptional dissertations will receive at least ₦5 million, while master’s degree graduates will earn ₦10 million. Doctoral candidates with groundbreaking research will be awarded up to ₦20 million, alongside national recognition for their academic contributions.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a strategic effort to reposition education in Nigeria by placing greater value on intellectual achievement and research-driven innovation.
He explained that the programme reflects a shift in national priorities, where academic excellence is celebrated as a key driver of development. According to him, student research should not only meet graduation requirements but also serve as a foundation for industrial growth and national progress.
Alausa further noted that the initiative aims to create a balance in societal recognition by ensuring that academic achievers receive as much attention and reward as other high-profile figures in society.
The programme will be fully funded through the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), in partnership with key stakeholders, ensuring sustainability without placing additional pressure on public finances.
To oversee the process, a 10-member committee chaired by Abubakar Sambo will manage the submission, evaluation, and selection of award recipients. The committee includes representatives from major academic and regulatory bodies such as the National Universities Commission and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
The award scheme is expected to commence with a call for submissions in May, followed by evaluation between June and September. The winners will be formally honoured at a national ceremony scheduled to take place in Abuja later in the year.
The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s academic ecosystem while encouraging students to pursue research that can contribute meaningfully to national development.
