The Labour Party Nigeria has announced May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision was taken during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission. According to a statement by Ken Asogwa, media aide to the party’s interim national chairman, the timetable forms part of preparations for the upcoming elections. He disclosed that the party will conduct governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries on May 15. As part of compliance with electoral regulations, the party also fixed April 15 for the submission of its updated membership register to INEC. The NEC further approved key internal activities, including ward congresses scheduled for March 26, local government congresses on March 28, and state congresses on March 31. The party’s national convention is set to hold on April 11. The council also reviewed recent developments within the party, including an alleged invasion of its national secretariat by suspected hoodlums. Following recommendations from its disciplinary committee, some members were suspended over allegations of indiscipline, anti-party activities, and involvement in the disruption. In a move to strengthen internal operations, the party approved the expansion of its membership register through a combination of digital registration and manual processes, especially in rural areas. The initiative is aimed at improving transparency, boosting participation, and modernising party administration. The NEC also authorised the appointment of interim leaders to fill vacant positions across party structures pending the conduct of proper congresses. In addition, members were urged to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms to promote unity and stability within the party. The council reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman, following a court ruling that upheld her position. The party also commended INEC for promptly implementing the court’s decision. With the timetable now in place, the Labour Party has effectively set the stage for its internal political process ahead of the 2027 elections.

Education

  • Students of the University of Jos have been evacuated from campus following rising insecurity in Jos, as tensions continue to mount after recent deadly attacks. The evacuation was ordered after authorities shut down the institution over safety concerns linked to renewed unrest in parts of the city. Students were seen leaving their hostels in groups, carrying their belongings as they moved toward safer locations. The Plateau State Government provided transportation to support the relocation process, ensuring that students were moved out of the campus environment despite existing movement restrictions. University management explained that the decision was taken as a precaution after reports of disturbances near the school raised fears about the safety of students and staff. Officials also confirmed that security personnel have been deployed across the campus to protect facilities while the institution remains closed. The situation in Jos deteriorated shortly after a curfew imposed in response to earlier attacks was relaxed, with fresh incidents of violence reported in some areas. The unrest follows a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, where dozens of residents were killed, heightening fears across the state and prompting urgent action to prevent further casualties. Authorities have continued to appeal for calm while efforts are ongoing to restore stability in the affected communities.
