In a bold move to enhance transparency and promote inclusive governance, the Anambra State Government has unveiled a new citizens’ engagement platform, offering residents the chance to directly share their views on government activities and participate in policy and project planning.
The platform was launched during the unveiling of the state’s Open Government Partnership (OGP) Action Plan II in Awka, with support from UNICEF. The initiative aims to create a more interactive and accessible way for citizens to engage with their government, particularly on projects affecting their communities.
Chiamaka Nnake, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, explained that the platform would allow citizens to provide valuable input on government projects and initiatives, ensuring that the needs and concerns of local communities are heard and addressed.
“The era where people claim they don’t know what the government is doing is over,” Nnake stated. “This platform empowers every community in Anambra to have a voice. If citizens are dissatisfied with developments in their areas, they can comment, criticize, and engage government officials directly from the comfort of their homes.”
The OGP framework, which promotes transparency, accountability, and public participation, has been adopted by Anambra State as the first in Southern Nigeria to integrate it into its budget planning and implementation. Nnake emphasized the platform’s potential for real-time interaction between citizens and government representatives, fostering better dialogue and trust.
In his remarks, the Chief of UNICEF’s Enugu Field Office highlighted the strong partnership between UNICEF and Anambra State, noting that the launch of this platform signifies the growing importance of grassroots engagement in governance.
“This platform ensures that communities will feel the direct impact of governance, particularly as local government autonomy becomes more of a reality in Nigeria,” he said, reaffirming UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the initiative’s sustainability.
Dr. Victor Chima, Social Policy Officer at UNICEF Enugu, commended the state for its “innovative” approach, pointing out that the platform allows residents to easily track Anambra’s performance at local, national, and global levels.
Dr. Gloria Amadi, National OGP Coordinator, also praised the platform, describing it as “fantastic” and promising to spotlight Anambra’s efforts at the national level. She confirmed that all issues related to Anambra’s OGP status had been resolved, paving the way for the successful implementation of the new action plan.
The launch event was attended by key government officials, including commissioners, permanent secretaries, and directors, marking a significant step forward for inclusive governance in Anambra State.
