Former Borno Central Senatorial candidate, Hon. Attom Magira, has taken legal action against the Borno State Government over the demolition of his multi-million naira shopping mall in Maiduguri.
The four-story commercial complex and multi-purpose hall, located on Sir Kashim Ibrahim Road, was torn down under the directive of Governor Babagana Zulum’s administration. While the state government has yet to publicly explain the reason behind the demolition, reports indicate that similar actions have been carried out on other structures deemed illegal.
Through his legal counsel, human rights lawyer Hamza N. Dantani of Kayode Ajulo & Co, Magira claims the demolition was politically motivated and a blatant disregard for due process. He insists that he legally acquired the land, obtained all necessary permits, and followed urban planning regulations.
Magira had already filed a legal appeal to challenge a sudden revocation notice by the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BOSUPDB), but his property was demolished before the case could be heard. His lawsuit argues that this act violated his constitutional right to fair hearing and property ownership.
The case is set to be heard at the Borno State High Court on April 22, 2025. As tensions rise, many see this legal battle as a test of governance, rule of law, and political fairness in the state.
