The United States has deployed multiple MQ-9 drones and about 200 troops to Nigeria to strengthen intelligence gathering and support ongoing counterterrorism operations. According to officials from both countries, the deployment is focused strictly on surveillance and advisory roles, with no involvement in direct combat or airstrikes. The mission aims to assist Nigerian forces in identifying, tracking, and responding to insurgent threats, particularly in the country’s troubled northern regions. A defence official described the move as part of a shared security effort, noting that the collaboration is designed to improve intelligence coordination and operational effectiveness. Confirming the development, Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, said U.S. personnel are operating from an airfield in Bauchi State. He explained that the deployment builds on an existing U.S.-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which provides real-time intelligence support to Nigerian field commanders. “Our U.S. partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities,” Uba stated. The MQ-9 drones, commonly known as Reaper drones, are capable of operating at high altitudes for extended periods and are widely used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Officials emphasised that the drones currently deployed in Nigeria are being used exclusively for surveillance purposes. The development comes amid rising insecurity linked to insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province. Recent attacks, including suicide bombings in parts of the northeast, have highlighted the persistent threat posed by these groups. Military authorities noted that insurgent organisations may continue to target vulnerable locations in an attempt to assert relevance through high-profile attacks. The duration of the U.S. deployment has not been specified, with both governments expected to review the arrangement based on evolving security needs. The partnership reflects a growing emphasis on intelligence-sharing and capacity-building as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its response to terrorism and violent extremism.

Education

  • Students of the University of Jos have been evacuated from campus following rising insecurity in Jos, as tensions continue to mount after recent deadly attacks. The evacuation was ordered after authorities shut down the institution over safety concerns linked to renewed unrest in parts of the city. Students were seen leaving their hostels in groups, carrying their belongings as they moved toward safer locations. The Plateau State Government provided transportation to support the relocation process, ensuring that students were moved out of the campus environment despite existing movement restrictions. University management explained that the decision was taken as a precaution after reports of disturbances near the school raised fears about the safety of students and staff. Officials also confirmed that security personnel have been deployed across the campus to protect facilities while the institution remains closed. The situation in Jos deteriorated shortly after a curfew imposed in response to earlier attacks was relaxed, with fresh incidents of violence reported in some areas. The unrest follows a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, where dozens of residents were killed, heightening fears across the state and prompting urgent action to prevent further casualties. Authorities have continued to appeal for calm while efforts are ongoing to restore stability in the affected communities.
