Ademola Lookman has responded strongly to Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s public criticism following the team’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Club Brugge.

The Nigerian forward, returning from injury, was introduced at halftime with Atalanta trailing 5-1 on aggregate. He made an immediate impact, scoring just 36 seconds after coming on. However, his missed penalty later in the game became the focal point of post-match discussions.

Lookman stepped up for the spot-kick despite the presence of designated takers Charles De Ketelaere and Mateo Retegui. His effort was saved by Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, and Atalanta failed to mount a comeback, crashing out with a 5-2 aggregate defeat.

After the match, Gasperini publicly criticized Lookman’s decision, saying:
“He is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen. Even in training, he barely converts. The designated takers were there, but in a moment of enthusiasm, he took the ball, and I didn’t appreciate that at all.”

Lookman, visibly disappointed, took to social media to defend himself.

“It saddens me to have to address this, especially after everything we’ve achieved together as a team and a city. Being singled out in this manner feels deeply disrespectful, especially given the effort and commitment I give every day for this club and its incredible fans.”

He also clarified the penalty situation:
“During the match, the designated taker instructed me to take it. I took responsibility in that moment to help the team. Football is about challenges, and I’ll continue to turn pain into power.”

With tensions now rising between Lookman and Gasperini, Atalanta’s management is reportedly stepping in to ease the situation. The Nigerian winger, who has been a key player for the club, could now be at the center of transfer speculation if relations with the coach continue to deteriorate.
