A bizarre legal mix-up occurred at the Lagos State High Court on Thursday when an individual on trial for a 2020 armed robbery was mistakenly listed as the perpetrator of a 2022 murder, despite being in prison custody at the time.

Lawyer Muhammed Adam shared the unusual incident, describing how the accused, identified only as Idris, was mistakenly named in connection with a murder case that occurred in Sabo-Yaba, two years after his arrest for the robbery.

“Something strange happened in court yesterday (Wednesday). A man standing trial for armed robbery in Lagos Island in 2020 was unexpectedly listed for a murder in 2022 in Sabo, Yaba,” Adam recounted on Thursday evening.

To make matters more confusing, Idris’ passport was attached to the murder case file, raising serious concerns about the accuracy of the charges. “The alleged murder occurred in Yaba while he was already in prison, making it impossible for him to have committed the crime,” Adam pointed out.

During the court proceedings, the presiding judge, Justice Harrison, rejected the case, insisting that a full investigation be conducted to determine how Idris had been mistakenly linked to a crime committed while he was incarcerated.

SaharaReporters attempted to contact Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, for further comment, but his calls went unanswered at the time of this report.
