The Lagos State government has set the record straight on concerns surrounding the cancer vaccine, affirming that it does not cause infertility or encourage promiscuity. This reassurance was given by Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, during the Hilda Egbo 10th Anniversary Cancer-Free Gala and Fundraising event in Ikoyi, Lagos.

At the event, which aimed to raise ₦200 million for the St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation, Ogunyemi emphasized that the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is both safe and essential for cancer prevention. She highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to make cancer treatment more accessible, including subsidizing care, partnering with treatment centers, and upgrading existing facilities.

“We’re working through the Lagos State Health Scheme to expand cancer treatment coverage. The HPV vaccine is free, effective, and does no harm—it won’t cause infertility or influence behavior. Our focus is on advocacy and awareness to help people make informed decisions,” she stated.

Breast cancer survivor and celebrant, Hilda Egbo, used the occasion to advocate for collective support in funding cancer care. “Cancer treatment is expensive, but every diagnosed patient deserves a fighting chance. As a society, we must come together to help those who can’t afford it,” she urged.

The event also saw the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) and St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation reiterating the importance of early detection and accessible care. Foundation founder, Mrs. Mojisola Animashaun, stressed the need for more cancer centers, lamenting that many Nigerians lack both treatment options and information on where to seek help.

With increased awareness and better healthcare infrastructure, stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that more lives would be saved, reinforcing the message that cancer is not a death sentence but a battle that can be won with proper support and treatment.
