Manchester United’s chase for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen looks increasingly difficult, with financial challenges standing in the way of a potential deal. Transfer expert Ben Jacobs has suggested that the Nigerian international’s move to Old Trafford may be virtually impossible due to the club’s current financial struggles.
As United sits in 14th place in the Premier League and navigates a turbulent season, including parting ways with manager Erik ten Hag early in the campaign, the club is facing significant hurdles both on and off the pitch. Despite the appointment of Ruben Amorim, the team continues to struggle, particularly in the attacking department, where neither Joshua Zirkzee nor Rasmus Højlund has been able to provide the consistent goal-scoring form needed to elevate the squad’s performance.
With United’s forward line underperforming, speculation about potential striker signings has been rife, and Osimhen has emerged as a top target. The Nigerian international, currently on loan at Galatasaray after a difficult summer transfer window with Napoli, has been in fine form, scoring 22 goals in 27 appearances, which has only intensified transfer rumors.
However, Jacobs has cast doubt on the feasibility of the move, telling GIVEMESPORT, “It could become irrelevant whether Osimhen is open to Manchester United, if Manchester United can’t afford that deal.” He pointed out that Manchester United is facing several financial barriers that complicate the deal, including the club’s position under Profitability and Sustainability Regulations, the possibility of missing out on European football next season, and reduced broadcast revenue after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Recent reports have suggested various scenarios for Osimhen’s future, including a potential swap deal involving Rasmus Højlund. Napoli, who hold Osimhen’s contract until 2026 with an option to extend it to 2027, are reportedly exploring several options for the striker.
Osimhen’s situation has been complicated after negotiations with Chelsea and Saudi clubs fell through last summer. He ultimately signed a contract extension with Napoli and moved to Galatasaray on loan, where his performances continue to attract the attention of top European clubs.
While Manchester United sees Osimhen as a marquee signing, the financial realities suggest that securing the striker may be more challenging than initially thought. The club may need to consider alternative options or wait until their financial situation improves before pursuing the Nigerian star.
