Wabara’s ‘Expulsion’ from PDP: A Political Circus Gone Too Far

A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) pressure group, Frontiers for Change and Progress, has slammed the recent announcement of Senator Adolphus Wabara’s expulsion, calling it a “ridiculous political joke taken too far.”

The group, through its National Coordinator, Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu, dismissed the expulsion as a “futile hatchet job by desperate political hirelings.”

Power Struggle Within Abia PDP

The controversy erupted after Abraham Amah, a former acting spokesman of the Abia State PDP, declared Wabara expelled for alleged anti-party activities. The move came just 24 hours after Amah, who also claims to be the PDP Chairman in Abia, announced the expulsion.

However, PDP Frontiers for Change insists that Amah lacks the legitimacy to suspend or expel Wabara, who currently serves as the Chairman of PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT). The group further pointed out that a court injunction is in place restraining Amah and his faction from taking such actions.

A Battle of Influence

The core of the issue appears to be a power struggle within PDP, particularly between factions loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and those determined to keep PDP independent.

Wabara, a former Senate President, has reportedly refused to align with APC-backed forces seeking to manipulate PDP’s leadership. His firm stance on the Rivers State PDP crisis and the ongoing tussle over the party’s National Secretary position has made him a target, according to the statement.

The group also took a jab at Wabara’s critics, questioning why they were fixated on his alleged “anti-party” comments while ignoring PDP figures openly endorsing APC policies and leaders.

“If honest remarks are now a crime, why hasn’t APC charged President Tinubu for praising PDP’s Gov. Peter Mbah? Or why hasn’t the same APC criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for commending Gov. Alex Otti?” the statement queried.

The Road Ahead for PDP

Despite these internal wranglings, the group affirmed that Wabara and other PDP leaders remain focused on strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“No amount of blackmail or distraction will stop progressive forces within PDP from repositioning the party for victory,” the statement concluded.

As tensions rise, political watchers are keen to see whether PDP can navigate these power struggles without tearing itself apart.
