Perry’s International Women’s Day Celebration: A Tribute to Power, Legacy, and the Future!

This Saturday, Perry will once again be the heartbeat of empowerment as the town comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day in a grand and inspiring way. More than just an event, this is a movement—one that honors the resilience of past generations, fuels the ambitions of the present, and shapes the confidence of young women stepping into their futures.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

“We’re just celebrating women—women before us and, hopefully, inspiring young women to feel confident about themselves and their future,” says Carol Cavanaugh, a driving force behind the event.

What started as a simple gathering among friends has blossomed into a full-fledged community tradition. The event, first hosted in 2018, took a brief hiatus due to COVID but returned in 2023 stronger than ever. Now, Perry is gearing up for yet another unforgettable gathering.

What to Expect This Year?

Set to take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday at the historic Hotel Pattee, this year’s event promises an inspiring lineup of speakers, engaging discussions, and a spirit of sisterhood that cannot be ignored.

Powerful Voices, Inspiring Stories

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Karen Mason, the first curator of the Iowa Women’s Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries. Alongside her, the stage will welcome:

  • Heidi Stoffel, founder and executive director of Aspire Academy LLC, a beacon of leadership.
  • Saily Bah, a 12-year-old author and illustrator from Waukee, proving that no dream is too big, no age too small.
  • Lori Seeley, retired Perry PE teacher and advocate for girls in sports.

Adding youthful energy to the event, Perry High School seniors Olivia Christensen and Mylah Meis will serve as announcers, ensuring the day runs smoothly and memorably.

More Than Just an Event—A Movement!

Doors open at 9:15 a.m., and while the event is free to attend, donations are welcomed. Attendees are also encouraged to bring feminine hygiene products, which will be donated to Perry High School and Perry Food Pantry—a simple yet impactful way to support women and girls in need.

Of course, what’s a celebration without good food and surprises? Guests will enjoy pastries, coffee, and tea, with local businesses contributing exciting door prizes. For those who wish to extend the festivities, a soup and salad luncheon will follow the main event for just $10.

A Celebration Rooted in History

Cavanaugh’s journey with International Women’s Day began during her time living in Kazakhstan, where she first experienced the global recognition of the day. “After living there for eight years, I came home and missed celebrating it,” she recalls. What started as a small gathering in her home soon flourished into an annual community-wide event.

Today, this celebration wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of countless women volunteers in Perry. Their passion and effort have turned this vision into a reality, with local female business owners stepping up to donate gifts and ensure the event thrives.

Why This Year is More Important Than Ever

The 2024 theme, #InspireInclusion, echoes the need for unity, representation, and progress. As women around the world continue to break barriers and demand change, this event serves as a reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much more we can achieve together.

So, whether you’re a longtime supporter or attending for the first time, don’t miss this opportunity to be part of something bigger. Join us this Saturday, and let’s celebrate the strength, resilience, and future of women in Perry and beyond!
