Argentina’s quest to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has hit a major hurdle, with Lionel Messi ruled out of their upcoming qualifiers due to a groin injury.

The 37-year-old Inter Miami star sustained a low-grade adductor strain during his club’s 2-1 victory over Atlanta United, as confirmed by his club on Monday. While no specific recovery timeline was given, his absence means Argentina will have to navigate crucial clashes against Uruguay on March 22 and Brazil on March 25 without their captain and top scorer.

Messi’s injury comes at a pivotal time, as Argentina leads the South American qualifying table by five points. A win against Uruguay could virtually seal their place in the tournament set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Alongside Messi, Argentina will also be without Roma forward Paulo Dybala and River Plate full-back Paulo Montiel, both sidelined due to injuries. Meanwhile, Brazil will be missing Neymar, who is still recovering from a thigh injury.

Despite these setbacks, Argentina boasts a strong squad, including Premier League stars Emiliano Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Enzo Fernandez, as well as in-form Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

With two high-stakes matches ahead, all eyes will be on Argentina’s resilience as they aim to punch their ticket to the World Cup without their talisman.
