The Osun State House of Assembly is set to introduce a groundbreaking bill that will officially recognize and document Islamic and traditional marriages, ensuring couples receive legal certificates.
The proposed Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriage Bill 2024 aims to streamline marriage documentation, making it easier for couples to process international documents for travel and legal matters. The bill, spearheaded by Osogbo State Constituency lawmaker Rasheed Lawal, also includes provisions for issuing licenses for Islamic and traditional marriages while generating revenue for the state through certification fees.
Speaker of the House Adewale Egbedun emphasized that the bill will provide numerous benefits, including formal recognition of these marriage types and improved social structure for residents.
If passed, the legislation will bring long-overdue legal backing to Islamic and traditional unions, ensuring they hold the same legitimacy as civil marriages in the state.
