The House of Representatives has strongly denied allegations that lawmakers were bribed with $5,000 each to approve President Bola Tinubu’s State of Emergency declaration in Rivers State.
Deputy House spokesperson, Hon. Philip Agbese, dismissed the claims as “malicious lies from the pit of hell,” insisting that the decision was made purely in the national interest. He emphasized that lawmakers acted out of patriotism to restore peace in Rivers, not for financial gain.
“The House remains an independent institution driven by democratic principles, not cash-for-vote schemes,” Agbese stated, accusing political opponents of spreading falsehoods to discredit the parliament.
He further explained that the House amended the emergency declaration, ensuring that the National Assembly would temporarily oversee legislative duties in Rivers and that the emergency period could be shortened if peace is restored quickly.
Agbese also reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to democracy, assuring Nigerians that the move was not meant to suppress Rivers’ institutions but to prevent further instability.
Dismissing rumors of bribery, Agbese urged Nigerians to trust the parliament’s decision, saying the goal is to protect democracy and restore order in Rivers State.
