The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Joseph Urum, an employee of Do Good Farm in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA. The case has sparked controversy after the attending doctor revealed that he extracted about three litres of pus from the late farmer’s abdomen before he passed away.

As tension brews, the paramount ruler of Abiriba, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu (Enachoken Abiriba IV), has called for peace and justice for both the deceased and the farm owner. Meanwhile, the police have detained several suspects, with officers from the State CID visiting the hospital to gather more details.

Joseph’s family is demanding answers, claiming he had no known illness before his death. His mother and siblings have questioned why surgery was performed without their consent and why his body was taken to the mortuary before they were allowed to see it.

The drama took another turn when the US-based farm owner, Onyinye Urum Ukaegbu Ibe, who is also Joseph’s step-aunt, petitioned the Inspector General of Police, seeking a thorough investigation. She dismissed allegations of foul play, calling them an attempt to sabotage her investment.

The doctor who treated Joseph, Dr. Alexander Ohanyere of Evergreen Hospital, Mbaise, defended his actions, stating that the patient was in critical condition when brought in. He explained that the massive pus drainage was a desperate attempt to save Joseph, whose intestines were severely infected.

Further complicating matters, reports suggest Joseph was initially referred to FMC Umuahia but was allegedly turned away due to lack of space, leading his handlers to seek alternative care in Mbaise. FMC Umuahia has promised to investigate these claims.

As emotions run high, the traditional ruler has urged calm, preventing an attempt by angry youths to burn down the piggery farm. While speculation swirls, police continue their investigation, with calls for an autopsy to determine the true cause of Joseph’s death.
