A dramatic joint security operation between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command and the military has successfully rescued a naval officer and two civilians kidnapped in Abuja. The victims were abducted on March 21, 2025, during a violent attack by armed assailants in Mpape.

The kidnapping occurred when armed men stormed the Maman Vatsa Estate gate, blocked Mpape Road, and opened fire on passing vehicles before abducting their victims. Shortly after, the kidnappers contacted the families, demanding a staggering ₦500 million for the naval officer, Lt. Cynthia Akor, and ₦200 million each for the two civilians.

According to FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the operation to rescue the victims began following a distress call, leading to an immediate response. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), DCP Isyaku Sharu, coordinated a highly strategic rescue mission, enlisting the help of the Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local hunters.

The rescue mission spanned multiple areas, including Mpape, Gidan Bawa, Anguwan Mu’azu, and Yelwa Hills, extending into neighboring Nasarawa State. After acting on credible intelligence, the security operatives tracked the suspects to a Fulani resettlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills. Between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on March 23, four suspects were arrested, and the victims were freed unharmed.

In addition to the arrest of the suspects, operatives also seized ₦3.2 million, suspected to be ransom money from previous kidnappings. The rescued victims are currently receiving medical care at the Nigerian Army Clinic and are reported to be in stable condition.

While the operation has successfully neutralized some of the kidnappers, efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects. Security measures have been reinforced in Mpape and surrounding areas to prevent further incidents. Authorities have assured the public that normal activities can continue without fear.

The swift and coordinated efforts of the police and military showcase the commitment of Nigerian security forces in combating the growing issue of kidnapping in the country.
