The shocking death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of the tech startup Bumpa, has sparked national outrage, with Amnesty International demanding justice.

Opayele, 31, was involved in a fatal accident on March 4, 2025, while riding his power bike home from the gym along Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos. The driver, Biola Adams-Odutayo, allegedly failed to yield while merging onto the expressway, colliding with Opayele and leaving him unconscious on the road.

In a disturbing twist, eyewitnesses claim Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional, refused to transport the critically injured Opayele to the hospital—reportedly because she didn’t want blood stains in her car. He was eventually taken to a hospital where medical staff allegedly declined treatment. By the time he was admitted elsewhere, it was too late. He was pronounced dead after midnight.

Adams-Odutayo was arrested and charged with reckless driving but later released on bail, a move that has fueled public outrage. Amnesty International took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn what it calls a failure of justice:

“Biola Adams-Odutayo’s reckless and lawless driving killed Adetunji Opayele (TeeJay), the Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa. Nigeria’s corrupt law enforcement is letting her get away with murder. This crime must not be covered up. Relevant Nigerian authorities must ensure that justice is done now.”

The incident has ignited a nationwide demand for accountability, with over 35,000 Nigerians signing a petition on Change.org, urging the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to take decisive action. As the call for justice grows louder, all eyes remain on the authorities to ensure Opayele’s tragic death does not go unpunished.
