By dawn on Monday, Michigan’s largest utility providers, DTE and Consumers Energy, confirmed a staggering 183,000 customers still without electricity—though this marked an improvement from the peak of over 227,000 outages the night before. Consumers Energy spokesman Chris Fultz described the weekend as a “perfect storm of Michigan’s unpredictable weather,” as the company deployed over 600 crews to battle the devastation.

March, usually known for its gentle exit, delivered a bitter parting shot. Monday’s temperatures hovered in the 40s before plunging into the icy 20s overnight, setting the stage for more weather whiplash midweek, with forecasts predicting a rollercoaster climb back into the 60s.

Beyond Michigan, the storms lashed Wisconsin, Indiana, and even Ontario, Canada, leaving neighborhoods coated in an inch-thick glaze of ice. Reports indicated over 900,000 were left powerless, with tornadoes and winds gusting beyond 90 mph wreaking further havoc.
