Sedona Prince Stays Off WNBA Draft Board Amid Controversy and Concerns

The 2025 WNBA Draft saw several big NCAA stars find new homes, but one high-profile player, Sedona Prince from TCU, was noticeably absent from the draft list. Despite being a dominant 6-foot-7 center, a rare asset in the league, Prince failed to hear her name called on draft night, raising questions about her future in the WNBA.
Prince, who has been a fixture in college basketball for the past seven years, has faced significant controversy and scrutiny leading up to the draft. Allegations of sexual and physical abuse from multiple ex-girlfriends and partners have plagued her reputation, casting a shadow over her athletic prowess. In addition to the legal and ethical concerns, Prince’s age (she turns 25 in May) and history of injuries also raised red flags for many WNBA teams. These factors seem to have outweighed her on-court talent during the draft process.
Despite these challenges, Prince was still widely projected to be a second-round pick in mock drafts, with some outlets, including Yahoo Sports, even predicting she would go in the first round. However, when the draft concluded, Prince was not selected. Instead, her TCU teammates, Hailey Van Lith and Madison Conner, were picked in the first and third rounds, respectively.
Prince’s journey to the draft has been unconventional. After transferring to TCU as a graduate student in 2023, she was granted several NCAA waivers, making her one of the most experienced players in the draft pool. However, her age and injury history raised doubts among general managers. One anonymous GM told ESPN that the large age gap between Prince and some of her younger opponents made it difficult to assess her true skill level. “She’s like a 24-year-old playing against, what, sometimes 18-year-olds?” the GM said, further questioning if Prince’s success was a result of her age advantage.
The allegations against Prince, which have been ongoing since 2019, have added to the complexity of her draft prospects. Four women have accused Prince of misconduct, with two allegations of sexual misconduct and two involving physical abuse. Despite these serious accusations, TCU did not take action against her, and Prince helped lead the team to its first-ever Elite Eight appearance. During the tournament, she averaged 15 points per game, including a 21-point performance in the Sweet 16 against Notre Dame. However, her performance in the Elite Eight against Texas was disappointing, as she only scored four points and fouled out of the game.
Ultimately, the reasons behind Prince’s exclusion from the draft remain unclear. Although several general managers showed interest in her, none took the risk of drafting her. This outcome speaks volumes about the impact of her off-court issues and the complexities of her situation.
