Shell Offshore Gas Nigeria: New Investment Announced

Shell has approved a major offshore gas project in Nigeria, marking another big step for the nation’s energy sector. The project will boost gas output and strengthen electricity supply across Nigeria.
The company said operations will take place in the deepwater Niger Delta. It expects to produce about 500 million cubic feet of gas daily.

This gas will power local industries and support export through the Nigeria LNG plant. According to Shell, the project shows its long-term confidence in Nigeria’s economic growth and commitment to cleaner energy.

Supporting Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” Plan

Shell’s Country Chair, Osagie Okunbor, said the project supports both national and company goals. “Nigeria’s gas resources are immense,” he said. “We’re investing for a cleaner, more stable energy future.”

The initiative follows collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and global partners. It aligns with the government’s Decade of Gas Policy, designed to position natural gas as a key transition fuel between oil and renewables.

Economic and Social Impact

Experts say the new Shell offshore gas Nigeria project will create thousands of jobs, strengthen export revenue, and boost national earnings. “This is a big win for the economy,” said Tunde Adetola, an energy analyst. “Gas provides Nigeria with a cleaner, more reliable path to growth.”

Shell has operated in Nigeria for over six decades. Despite challenges such as oil theft and environmental risks, the company remains one of Nigeria’s most trusted energy investors.
