The University of Ilorin is making bold moves towards sustainable transportation with plans to roll out 100 electric scooters after students and staff raised concerns over transportation problems following the relocation of the campus stadium.

The main stadium was moved to the university’s main entrance in October to improve security and align with global best practices. The change, however, required students to walk longer distances and spend more on daily transportation.

In response, Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole announced that the institution would soon introduce electric vehicles, supported by temporary charging stations, to ease travel across campus and reduce carbon emissions.

The President of the Students’ Union, Idris Adelu, hailed the decision, calling it a result of the union’s sustained advocacy. Some students, however, remain cautious, questioning how soon cars and trailers will actually be ready.
