Umar Moriki, 62, Zurmi local government deputy chairman and adviser on rural electrification, was shot dead by gunmen on the Gusau-Tsafe highway in Fegi village in Tsafe local government, Zamfara state, on Saturday.
The attack came after Moriki attended a stakeholder meeting hosted by the Defense Minister, Bello Matawalle.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Zamfara described his murder as a heinous crime and called on the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators. The move comes amid rising banditry rates in northern Nigeria, which is expected to claim the lives of over 2,266 people in the first half of 2025.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, as residents voice concerns about an increase in crime in the area.
