President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented to the National Assembly the 2026 federal budget estimate of £54.46 trillion, with a substantial portion of the expenditure going towards national defense and security.

In his budget presentation on Friday, December 19, 2025, the President highlighted key priority sectors and spending areas that the administration views as critical to economic stability, infrastructure development, and greater security.

The defense sector received an allocation of £5.41 billion, reflecting the government’s focus on strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture amid ongoing challenges such as insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and other violent crimes affecting various parts of the country.

Tinubu said the proposed budget is designed to balance fiscal responsibility with strategic investments that promote growth, protect citizens and improve quality of life. Other sectors, including education, health, transportation, agriculture and energy, were also included in the budget framework, with allocations expected to address pressing national needs and build resilience in key areas of the economy.

The budget will now move to legislative consideration, where members of the National Assembly will examine, debate and eventually approve the appropriations bill in accordance with constitutional provisions and parliamentary procedures.
