Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially welcomed the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a statement released on Wednesday, Atiku described the development as a significant milestone in the history of political coalitions in Nigeria. The declaration took place in Enugu, the political capital of the Southeast region.

Atiku expressed his pleasure at reuniting with his former running mate and associate. He noted that Obi’s entry into the ADC signals the beginning of a robust working relationship aimed at strengthening the opposition. The former Vice President emphasized that this union is crucial for forming a government capable of delivering prosperity and peace to the people.

“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Atiku stated. He highlighted the strategic importance of the move in building a “virile opposition” to the ruling party.

The Waziri of Adamawa used the metaphor of a “Coalition train” to describe the growing momentum of the opposition. He noted that as the train leaves Enugu, it is headed toward other regions to gather more support. Atiku expressed hope that this step would inspire other patriots across the country to join the cause.

This development confirms weeks of speculation regarding a major political realignment ahead of the next election cycle. Political analysts believe that a merger between key opposition figures could pose a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The choice of Enugu for the declaration underscores the strategic importance of the Southeast in this new arrangement.
