The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially called for a broad political coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking at a historic gathering in Enugu on Wednesday, Obi urged his supporters, the Obidient Movement, and opposition members nationwide to unite for a “New Nigeria.” He stated that the coalition is led by former Senate President David Mark.
The event witnessed the presence of heavyweights from across the political spectrum. Distinguished leaders in attendance included former Governors Okwesili Nwodo, Achike Udenwa, Sam Egwu, and Emeka Ihedioha. Prominent senators such as Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, and Tony Nwoye were also present to lend their support to the movement.
In his address, Obi delivered a stinging rebuke of the current political class. He argued that Nigeria is not poor but has been “looted into poverty” by leaders who exploit the country. He lamented that the existing system rewards mediocrity and punishes merit, leaving the nation suffocating under impunity and greed.
“Our tragedy arises from the deliberate sabotage by a political class that exploits the country and its people,” Obi declared. He emphasized that the time for cosmetic makeovers is over and that genuine, patriotic change is needed. The former Anambra governor insisted that the choice is between continuing the cycle of decay or summoning the courage to disrupt entrenched corruption.
Obi also highlighted the presence of national figures outside the Igbo community, including former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Edo Governor Oserheimen Osunbor. He noted that their attendance underscores the national spread of the new coalition. According to him, the goal is to drive rapid socio-economic transformation and inclusive development.
Concluding his speech, Obi reaffirmed his belief that a productive and inclusive Nigeria is achievable. He tasked the current generation with creating a new framework for unity and progress. “Let history record that Nigeria’s turning point begins here and now,” he affirmed.
