A sombre atmosphere enveloped the London Central Mosque on Sunday as the Janaza (funeral prayer) was held for Sina Ghami and Abdul Latif Kevin Ayodele. The two men, regarded as integral members of Anthony Joshua’s inner circle, died in a fatal car crash in Ogun State, Nigeria. Joshua, who was a passenger in the vehicle, survived with minor injuries.
Following the prayers at the mosque, the funeral procession moved to Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium for the burial. A wake was also scheduled to take place later in the afternoon at Cavendish Banqueting Hall in North West London, allowing friends and family to pay their final respects.
The bodies of Ghami and Ayodele were repatriated to the United Kingdom earlier in the week to facilitate the funeral arrangements. Their deaths have cast a shadow over what was meant to be a celebratory period for Joshua, who had travelled to Nigeria for a holiday following his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami.
The 36-year-old former heavyweight champion was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve after being treated for minor injuries sustained in the collision. The accident involved a Lexus SUV which collided with a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged by the Ogun State Police Command. He faces counts of causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid license. The court granted him bail in the sum of N5 million and adjourned the case until January 20.
