A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has scheduled February 25, 2026, for the continuation of the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver linked to a fatal road crash involving members of boxer Anthony Joshua’s team.
Kayode, 46, appeared before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, where the court considered an application that halted proceedings for the day.
The defendant is standing trial on multiple counts related to road traffic offences under the Federal Highway Act, as applicable in Ogun State. The charges stem from an accident that resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Prosecutors allege that the defendant drove in a dangerous and negligent manner, leading to the fatal crash. The charge sheet also includes allegations of driving without due care, causing bodily harm and property damage, as well as operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.
During the court session, prosecuting counsel Nijiwe Richard requested an adjournment. He told the court that the prosecution needed time to forward the case file to the Ogun State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal guidance.
Defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan opposed the request and informed the court that the defence was prepared to proceed without delay.
After listening to submissions from both sides, the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25 for further hearing.
The court also maintained the defendant’s bail terms, granting bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties.
The case follows a tragic incident on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and members of his support team reportedly crashed into a stationary truck.
Ayodele and Ghami lost their lives in the accident, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Medical officials later discharged the former world heavyweight champion after confirming his condition was stable. He subsequently travelled to the United Kingdom to attend funeral activities for the deceased members of his team.
The bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were repatriated to the UK, where funeral prayers were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
Both men were widely regarded as integral to Joshua’s career, and their deaths triggered an outpouring of tributes from the international boxing community.
