Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested eight individuals and confiscated six trucks during a major crackdown on illegal mining operations along the Ilorin–Ogbomoso corridor spanning Kwara and Oyo states.
The arrests, carried out by officers of the commission’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate, followed actionable intelligence and days of coordinated surveillance targeting unlawful mineral excavation and transportation in the area.
According to the EFCC, the suspects were intercepted on Saturday while transporting large quantities of minerals believed to be lithium and kaolin. The operation marks a significant step in the agency’s intensified efforts to curb illegal mining and protect Nigeria’s natural resources.
A statement issued on Monday by the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the latest arrests bring the total number of suspects apprehended for illegal mining activities in Kwara State to 18 within one month.
He explained that the suspects allegedly operated without valid mining licences, permits, or regulatory approvals, in clear violation of existing mining and environmental regulations.
The seized trucks, which were loaded with assorted solid minerals, have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Oyewale stated that preliminary findings indicate a well-organised illegal mining network operating across the two states, with sophisticated logistics for extraction and transportation.
He added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to dismantling illegal mining operations nationwide, warning individuals and groups involved in unlawful exploitation of solid minerals to desist or face severe legal consequences.
