Peter Obi has criticised Nigeria’s political leadership over the rising wave of insecurity in the country, accusing many leaders of focusing on the 2027 elections instead of addressing ongoing killings by terrorists.
The former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election made the remarks after a deadly attack on Ngoshe community in Borno State.
In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, Obi condemned the assault on a military facility and an internally displaced persons camp in the community, describing the incident as deeply disturbing.
He lamented that while communities continue to face deadly attacks from insurgents, many political leaders appear more concerned about strategies for the next general election.
According to him, it is troubling that at a time when citizens are losing their lives to terrorism, political actors are allegedly focused on manoeuvring for electoral advantage rather than confronting the country’s worsening security crisis.
Obi said the situation reflects the painful realities faced daily by many Nigerians, questioning how long citizens would continue to endure the consequences of poor leadership and ineffective governance.
He also asked how many more lives would be lost before decisive action is taken to protect vulnerable communities and dismantle the networks responsible for insurgent attacks.
The former presidential candidate expressed sympathy for families who lost loved ones during the attack and for residents forced to flee their homes.
He stressed that safeguarding lives and restoring dignity to affected communities must remain the top priority of any government that claims to represent the people.
The attack in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area, reportedly occurred after insurgents stormed a military base in the early hours of Wednesday before extending the assault to nearby residential areas.
Authorities say several people were killed during the attack, while many others remain missing.
Security officials confirmed that the attackers struck the military facility before moving into the community, leaving residents in fear and forcing many to flee to safer locations.
The incident has renewed concerns about security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East region, where insurgent groups have continued to launch attacks despite ongoing military operations.
