A violent confrontation between security operatives and suspected bandits in Katsina State has left a police officer and two civilians dead, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
The incident occurred along the Karadua–Musawa road in Matazu Local Government Area, where armed attackers reportedly intercepted a vehicle and opened fire on passengers. Two occupants of the car were killed instantly during the ambush.
Security forces, including police officers, military personnel, local vigilantes, and members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, were quickly deployed to the scene following distress calls from residents.
Authorities said the joint security team successfully repelled the attackers and secured the area, while the victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility.
However, the situation escalated when the gunmen regrouped and attempted a second assault on a police facility in the area. Officers on duty engaged the attackers in a gunfight and prevented them from overrunning the station.
During the exchange, one police officer lost his life while defending the facility.
The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, confirmed the incident and announced that additional security resources have been deployed to strengthen operations and prevent further attacks.
He also directed a comprehensive investigation to track down those responsible, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The police chief extended condolences to the families of the victims, describing the slain officer as a dedicated personnel who died in active service.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing operations.
The latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by armed groups in parts of northern Nigeria, with authorities continuing efforts to contain the situation and safeguard communities.
