A military base in Borno State came under heavy attack overnight, leaving some soldiers dead despite troops successfully defending the facility.
The incident unfolded in Benisheikh, where armed insurgents launched a surprise assault on troops stationed in the area. The fighters reportedly attempted to overrun the base but were met with strong resistance.
Troops engaged the attackers in a prolonged exchange of gunfire, eventually forcing them to retreat from the area.
Confirming the development, the Defence Headquarters said the soldiers held their ground and prevented a breach of the base. However, the military acknowledged that lives were lost during the confrontation, describing the fallen personnel as brave.
The operation falls under Operation HADIN KAI, which continues to lead counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East.
Residents in nearby communities reported hearing sustained gunfire during the night, while some travellers said movement along major routes in the area was briefly halted due to security concerns.
There were also indications that other nearby locations experienced similar disturbances, with civilians in some areas said to have been affected by stray bullets.
Military authorities have since urged the public to ignore unverified reports circulating online, stressing that accurate information will come through official channels.
Meanwhile, security forces have begun follow-up operations aimed at tracking down the fleeing attackers and preventing another strike.
