A quiet community in Plateau State has been thrown into mourning after a deadly overnight attack claimed the lives of eight people from the same family.

The incident took place in Mbwelle village, located in Bokkos Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly invaded the area late Thursday night, catching residents off guard.

Witnesses said the attackers fired repeatedly for several minutes, forcing villagers to flee for safety as panic spread across the community.

In addition to those killed, a number of residents sustained injuries, while others remain missing as search efforts continue.

Reacting to the incident, Bokkos LGA chairman, Samuel Amalau, described the killings as painful and deeply troubling. He said the attack has disrupted the peace of the area and left many families devastated.

He urged residents to stay alert and support security agencies with credible information, stressing that community cooperation is vital in preventing further violence.

Amalau also appealed for calm, particularly among young people, warning against any reaction that could worsen the already tense situation.

Security authorities have begun investigations into the attack. The spokesperson for the state police command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed that efforts are underway to uncover those behind the incident.

Meanwhile, a local peace advocate, Kefas Mallai, said the attack has increased fear and frustration among residents. He noted that concerns have been raised over the delay in security response during the incident.

Residents are now calling for stronger protection measures as uncertainty lingers in the area.
