The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of a senior officer and six soldiers following an explosion triggered by an improvised device in Monguno, Borno State.
According to military authorities, the incident occurred shortly after troops under Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled an attack by insurgents in the area.
Reports indicate that soldiers engaged the attackers in a heavy exchange of gunfire, eventually forcing them to retreat while maintaining control of their position.
However, tragedy followed the confrontation when the commanding officer moved forward to assess the situation on the ground. During this process, his vehicle reportedly struck an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in a fatal blast that claimed his life and those of six other personnel.
In an official statement, the military described the fallen officer as a leader who demonstrated exceptional courage by personally leading from the front, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised.
The statement also praised the dedication and sacrifice of the deceased soldiers, noting that their commitment reflects the core values of the Armed Forces.
Despite the loss, the military assured that troops remain in full control of the location and continue operations to prevent further attacks in the region.
Authorities reiterated their resolve to sustain ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East, emphasizing that the sacrifices of fallen personnel would not be in vain.
