Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu for federal support in developing the Ibom Deep Sea Port, a transformative project poised to boost Nigeria’s economy, ease port congestion, and create thousands of jobs.

Leading a powerful delegation of traditional rulers, political leaders, and business stakeholders to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Eno emphasized the strategic importance of the deep sea port in expanding Nigeria’s maritime economy and reducing pressure on existing ports in Lagos and Rivers State.

“No state can build a deep sea port alone. We need the federal government’s backing to turn this dream into reality. This project will not only benefit Akwa Ibom but will drive economic growth for the entire nation,” he stated.

With a natural depth of 17.2 meters, the Ibom Deep Sea Port is set to be Nigeria’s deepest, capable of accommodating large cargo vessels and boosting international trade. As part of the Ibom Industrial City, it is expected to attract foreign investments, drive industrialization, and position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.

A Call for Federal Intervention

Governor Eno highlighted the state’s commitment to the project, including investments in access roads and infrastructure, but stressed that federal support is essential for policy backing and funding.

“We are doing our part, but for this port to materialize, the federal government’s partnership is crucial.”

Beyond the port, Governor Eno also sought intervention for Akwa Ibom’s ecological challenges, revealing that gully erosion threatens key areas, including the Government House. He showcased an ambitious erosion reclamation project—the Arise Resort—and extended an invitation for the President to commission it.

A United Front for Progress

The high-profile delegation, including former Governor Udom Emmanuel, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and prominent stakeholders, presented a unified voice in advocating for the project.

In a symbolic move, Akwa Ibom traditional rulers conferred the title ‘Otuekong’ (Commander-in-Chief) on President Tinubu, urging him to prioritize the deep sea port’s completion.

Governor Eno expressed optimism that Tinubu’s administration, focused on economic expansion and infrastructure growth, would recognize the Ibom Deep Sea Port as a national asset.

“We believe Mr. President understands the significance of this project, and we look forward to working closely with the federal government to make it happen.”

A New Era of Political Unity

Beyond infrastructure, the visit also showcased an unprecedented display of political unity, with past and present leaders from both PDP and APC standing together for Akwa Ibom’s progress.

Former Governor Udom Emmanuel praised Tinubu’s open-door approach, calling the meeting a historic moment of collaboration.

“Once there is unity, there is peace, and peace brings progress. This is a great step forward for Akwa Ibom.”

With Akwa Ibom leaders rallying behind a shared vision, the ball is now in Tinubu’s court—will the federal government answer this call for a game-changing economic breakthrough?
