The Nigerian movie industry is mourning the death of popular actor Alexx Ekubo, who died at the age of 40.
The actor reportedly passed away on Monday night at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos, after battling liver cancer.
Former Big Brother Naija star and Actors Guild of Nigeria spokesperson, Boma Akpore, confirmed the news. He also revealed that the actor’s body had been moved to Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi.
The news shocked many Nigerians and triggered emotional reactions online.
Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described the loss as painful. In a social media post, he said Nollywood had lost a rare talent.
Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen also mourned the late actor. He recalled how he first met Ekubo in Surulere many years ago.
According to him, Ekubo regularly visited movie locations before getting his first acting role.
Alexx Ekubo had stayed away from public events and social media since late 2024.
Many fans had earlier noticed his long absence online.
The actor was born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was from Arochukwu in Abia State.
Over the years, he became one of Nollywood’s most recognised actors. Fans admired him for his fashion style, confidence and strong screen presence.
In 2020, the United Nations recognised him among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40.”
Following the announcement of his death, several celebrities shared tributes on social media.
Actress Funke Akindele said she was deeply saddened by the news. She also recalled the special bond they shared.
Singer Peter Okoye posted a short tribute, wishing the actor eternal rest.
Richard Mofe-Damijo described the death as difficult to accept. He praised Ekubo for the impact he made in Nollywood.
Actress Omoni Oboli said she was heartbroken by the loss of someone she considered a close friend.
Media entrepreneur Mo Abudu also paid tribute to the actor. She described him as kind, respectful and caring.
Kate Henshaw remembered the support Ekubo gave her after the death of her mother.
Other celebrities, including Yvonne Jegede, Kunle Remi and Ruth Kadiri, also expressed sadness over his passing.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore praised the late actor’s talent and contribution to the entertainment industry.
Broadcaster Oseni Rufai also joined many Nigerians in mourning the actor.
