The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils.

The industrial action is expected to take effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, and will remain in place until further notice.

The union announced the decision in a statement issued in Ibadan on Sunday, citing growing concerns over the safety of teachers and students across the state.

According to the union, the strike became necessary because there has been no successful rescue of the victims kidnapped during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area earlier this month.

The affected victims were taken from Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Ahoro-Esiele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, during the incident that occurred on May 15.

NUT Secretary, Olukayode Salami, said uncertainty surrounding the fate of the victims has continued to create fear among teachers and parents.

He noted that many teachers now feel unsafe carrying out their duties, while parents are becoming increasingly reluctant to send their children to school.

The union explained that the situation has heightened anxiety within affected communities and raised serious questions about the security of learning environments.

As a result, all public school teachers have been instructed to withdraw their services immediately until concrete progress is made in securing the release of the abducted victims.

The NUT urged members to remain peaceful, obey the law, and stay safe at home throughout the strike period.

The union also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring them that efforts to secure their freedom would continue.

It added that discussions with relevant authorities would remain ongoing until the victims are safely reunited with their loved ones.

The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety, and rights of teachers and learners while calling for urgent action to address the security challenges facing schools.
