The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (Benue SEMA) has issued an urgent flood warning to residents following a rise in the water level of the River Benue to 9.55 metres.
The warning was issued by the agency’s Executive Secretary, Sir James Aondoakaa Iorpuu, PhD, who said continuous monitoring had confirmed a significant increase in the river’s water level.
Benue SEMA urged residents living along riverbanks and in other flood-prone areas to take immediate precautionary measures, including relocating to higher ground and moving to designated safe areas.
The agency also advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways and to keep children away from rivers and drainage channels, describing the measures as necessary to protect lives.
Benue SEMA said it would continue to monitor the situation as part of its early-warning and disaster-response efforts. The agency urged residents to remain alert and comply with safety advisories as the water level continues to be monitored.
The latest warning underscores the need for residents in vulnerable communities to take precautionary measures as authorities monitor developments along the River Benue.
