The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has announced its commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to address the growing concerns of tanker accidents and fatalities in the state.

Corps Commander Joyce Alexander shared this initiative during a meeting with NUPENG executives, emphasizing the critical need for collaboration to resolve the ongoing issue of tanker-related incidents. According to a statement released on Saturday by the Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, the sector commander fully supported the Union’s proposal for the establishment of truck parks, referencing the United Nations’ road traffic regulations as a basis for the recommendation.

The statement read: “The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, is ready to work closely with NUPENG to find lasting solutions to tanker accidents and their associated fatalities.” The commander also called on private truck owners to ensure their vehicles are registered and that their drivers comply with safety regulations. Furthermore, she urged NUPENG to organize monthly public education sessions for drivers to promote safe practices.

Earlier in the meeting, NUPENG Chairman Izuchukwu Onaka pointed out that the poor condition of roads in Anambra remains a significant cause of tanker accidents. Onaka appealed to the government to prioritize road improvements and also requested the FRSC’s support in creating designated truck parks to help drivers rest and avoid dangerous night driving.

The meeting concluded with plans to host a Town Hall meeting for tanker and truck operators to address tanker-related incidents directly. Both the FRSC and NUPENG reaffirmed their shared commitment to improving road safety and reducing tanker accidents in Anambra.
