President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Prince Doyin Okupe, a renowned Nigerian politician, strategist, and medical doctor who made significant contributions to the nation’s political and medical fields.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Okupe, calling his death a tremendous loss to Nigeria.
“President Bola Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Prince Doyin Okupe, a medical doctor, politician, communicator, and strategist who played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape,” the statement read.
Okupe, a distinguished son of Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, held numerous key political positions during his career, including serving as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Special Assistant on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and played a pivotal role in the United Nigeria Congress Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Accord Party, where he served as the national leader. Most recently, he served as the Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign during the 2023 election.
In addition to his political work, Okupe made valuable contributions to the medical community as the co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos and the publisher of Life Mirror, a health-focused newspaper.
President Tinubu described Okupe as a “bold and articulate advocate for national development” and expressed sadness over the loss of his wealth of experience and insight, especially at a time when the nation could still benefit from his wisdom. He also sent his condolences to the government and people of Ogun State, particularly the Iperu-Remo community, acknowledging the profound impact of his passing on all who knew him.
“President Tinubu prays that God will grant repose to the departed patriot’s soul and comfort all,” Onanuga concluded in the statement.
