The Nigerian Senate has dismissed widespread claims that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The upper legislative chamber clarified that her six-month suspension was strictly due to her repeated violations of Senate rules and parliamentary decorum.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele issued a statement on Saturday, debunking what he described as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. He explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension followed recommendations from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which found her guilty of breaching Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended).

“The Senate’s decision was based on her disregard for legislative procedures, including refusing to sit in her designated seat, speaking without recognition from the presiding officer, and making disrespectful remarks against the Senate leadership,” Bamidele stated.

The Senate also noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Akpabio failed to meet procedural requirements, emphasizing that if it had been properly submitted, it would have been addressed on merit.

The embattled senator has, however, continued to insist that her suspension was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law (AIRL) has cautioned the Senate against mishandling the matter, warning that the controversy could erode public trust and damage Nigeria’s democracy. AIRL Chairman, Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa, urged the legislative body to ensure that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Kogi Central constituency does not suffer from lack of representation.

With tensions rising, political observers are watching closely to see whether the Senate will reconsider its stance if the senator issues a formal apology, as stipulated in her suspension terms.
