UYO – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, against interfering in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s investigation into corruption allegations against former Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Governor Eno, who had remained silent on the matter for weeks, recently defended his predecessor, describing him as a leader who served the state meritoriously. He dismissed the alleged misappropriation of N700 million in state funds as “imaginary” and called for an end to the “media trial.”

Reacting to Eno’s remarks, the Director-General of the APC Media Network in Akwa Ibom, Otuekong Iniobong John, criticized the governor’s stance, calling it “hasty and preemptive.”

“The responsibility of declaring the former governor innocent lies solely with the EFCC, after a thorough and impartial investigation,” he stated. “Making such declarations prematurely undermines the integrity of the process.”

John urged Governor Eno to focus on governance rather than shielding individuals facing corruption allegations.

“It is not the governor’s role to act as a protector of individuals implicated in wrongdoing. Rather, he should uphold accountability and ensure that the interests of the people remain the priority,” he added.

The APC emphasized the need for transparency and called on the EFCC to conduct its investigation without undue influence, stating that Akwa Ibom citizens deserve clarity and justice on the matter.

“Governor Eno must lead with integrity and prepare to render a full account of his stewardship when the time comes,” the APC added. “The EFCC must be allowed to do its job without political interference.”
