Tensions are running high at the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja, as armed security personnel have taken over the complex ahead of a crucial emergency plenary session scheduled for Monday, March 3, 2025.
As early as 7 a.m., security presence—already heightened in recent weeks—was further reinforced amid speculation of a leadership change within the Assembly. Reports indicate that newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, may step down to align with the political zoning structure favoring a candidate from the western zone.
Personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Police Command have taken strategic positions around the Assembly complex. Every visitor, including staff, is undergoing rigorous screening before being granted entry.
One staff member, speaking anonymously, described the atmosphere as “very tense,” adding, “It took me over an hour before I was allowed inside.”
This development follows a series of political negotiations involving President Bola Tinubu and key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders over the weekend. The resolution reportedly solidifies the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, though it allows him a face-saving exit by tendering his resignation instead of outright dismissal.
Sources from the Presidential Villa revealed that prominent APC figures—including former National Chairman Bisi Akande, ex-Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake, and a former Lagos commissioner—were involved in the high-level discussions with Tinubu.
