Leading opposition parties in Nigeria have announced plans to work together and present one presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The decision was revealed after a political summit held in Ibadan on Saturday, where several top opposition figures gathered to discuss a common strategy for the next polls.

Among those reported at the meeting were Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.

In a communiqué issued after the summit, participants said they are determined to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

They stated that the country needs real political alternatives and warned against any move that could weaken opposition voices ahead of future elections.

The coalition said discussions are ongoing to agree on a single presidential flagbearer who would receive support from participating parties.

They also raised concerns about the current electoral environment and called for reforms that would improve trust in the election process.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who hosted the summit, said democracy becomes weaker when opposition parties lose relevance.

He stressed that healthy competition remains necessary for a functioning democratic system.

Political economist Pat Utomi also addressed the gathering, speaking on economic hardship, rising food prices, insecurity, and the need for responsible leadership.
