The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, confirming that Nigeria’s next presidential election will now hold on January 16, 2027.

The updated schedule was announced on Wednesday and reflects recent changes introduced by the Electoral Act 2026, which altered key timelines within the country’s electoral framework.

According to INEC, the adjustment affects several stages of the election process, including party primaries, candidate nominations, campaign periods, and polling dates for presidential, governorship, and legislative elections.

The commission said the new calendar is designed to ensure strict compliance with the law while allowing sufficient time for logistical planning, voter education, and operational preparedness nationwide.

INEC noted that the rescheduling would help improve election credibility, reduce last-minute pressure, and strengthen transparency throughout the process.

Under the revised plan, political parties will now conduct their primaries earlier, while campaigns and candidate screenings will begin sooner than previously scheduled.

The commission urged political parties, civil society groups, security agencies, and voters to familiarise themselves with the new timeline to avoid disruptions and ensure smooth participation.

INEC further assured Nigerians of its readiness to deliver a credible, transparent, and peaceful election, adding that preparations are already underway to strengthen logistics, voter registration systems, and election technology.
