Millions of Nigerians could soon face a major mobile and internet blackout as telecom base stations in Lagos and Ogun States struggle with a crippling diesel shortage.
The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has sounded the alarm, warning that the ongoing strike by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a branch of NUPENG, has halted fuel supply to critical telecom infrastructure, putting connectivity at serious risk.
ATCON President, Tony Emoekpere, revealed that the strike—triggered by the alleged harassment of tanker drivers by police in Lagos—has disrupted diesel distribution, leaving telecom sites dangerously low on fuel.
“This is more than just a telecom issue—it’s a national emergency,” Emoekpere warned. “If urgent action isn’t taken, we could see a full-blown network shutdown, affecting businesses, emergency services, and everyday communication.”
ATCON is calling on the Lagos and Ogun State Governors to step in immediately and ensure diesel supply reaches telecom operators before the situation spirals out of control.
With connectivity hanging by a thread, the association is also urging security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis swiftly, warning that failure to act could cripple economic activities and public safety across the region.
