Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have been found dead in their New Mexico home, multiple media outlets reported on Thursday.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths, stating that authorities discovered the couple on Wednesday afternoon. While there were no immediate signs of foul play, the cause of death remains unknown. Reports also indicate their dog was found dead alongside them.
Hackman, 95, was a towering figure in Hollywood, defying early career doubts to win two Academy Awards. He famously portrayed tough New York detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection (1971), a role that earned him the Best Actor Oscar.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, was a classical pianist. The couple shared a quiet life away from the limelight in New Mexico.
Authorities have yet to release further details as investigations continue.
