Manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized how vital winning the Europa League this season is for Manchester United, as the club faces a difficult road to avoid its worst top-flight finish since 1990.
Ahead of their Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon on Thursday, Amorim reflected on the importance of this competition, which now represents United’s only chance to secure Champions League football for next season.
“Winning the Europa League is massive for us,” Amorim stated, acknowledging the broader impact on the team’s future. “It’s not just about a title, but about confidence and the future of the club. For next season, playing in the Champions League is a completely different atmosphere. Everything—our summer budget, transfers, and plans—relies on this competition.”
The financial stakes are high for United, with failing to qualify for the Champions League potentially costing the club at least £100 million. This added pressure comes at a time when the club’s financial flexibility is already limited.
United, who are unbeaten in the Europa League this season, will need to maintain their strong form after winning six of their last seven matches, having struggled in the early stages with three draws.
In terms of squad news, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo makes his return to the squad after two months out due to a muscular injury, although Amorim is taking a cautious approach with the talented 19-year-old. “We’re happy to have him back, but we need to manage his fitness carefully,” Amorim added.
While Mainoo’s return bolsters the squad, Luke Shaw could also make his first appearance since December, though Matthijs de Ligt is absent due to a foot issue.
